Fans of games like Super Metroid and Metroid: Samus Returns should feel excited about this game, which is set to release in October.įor now, it looks like the wait for Metroid Prime 4 will continue for at least a little while longer. A new 2D action entry to the franchise was unveiled called Metroid Dread, exploring a wholly new chapter of Samus' journey and introducing some exciting new horror elements. However, the Metroid franchise wasn't completely absent from the Nintendo Direct. On top of that, the COVID-19 pandemic has heavily impacted video game development across the board and it's likely that Metroid Prime 4 hit several hurdles, as a result. At that point, Metroid Prime 4 had been in development for a significant amount of time, but Takahashi cited that, "the current development progress has not reached the standards we seek in a sequel to the Metroid Prime series." As a result, development was essentially restarted from scratch, this time with original Metroid Prime creators Retro Studios.īecause of this, players should look less at Metroid Prime as a game that's been in development for four years and more as a game that's been in development for a little more than two. #Samus metroid prime updateSome may be asking, "What happened?" It's been a whopping four years since Metroid Prime 4 was first announced, all the way back at E3 2017. If you're looking at that embed above, your eyes are not deceiving you. ![]() Nintendo previously promised that Samus Aran would ride again, but the fourth chapter in the Metroid Prime series was nowhere to be found. However, as has proven to be the case more than once over the last few years, there was something missing. There were more than enough surprises to satisfy most Nintendo players. ![]() Metroid Prime 4 is in development for Nintendo Switch, but still without a release date.There was a lot packed into Tuesday's Nintendo Direct. In the meantime, we can only speculate about which characters and gameplay elements other than Samus will return in the long-awaited Nintendo Switch game. Hopefully, it indicates that Retro Studios and Nintendo will finally be ready to give another update on the project soon, even if Metroid Prime 4 isn’t slated for 2022 or 2023. Retro Studios has been hiring for the project ever since, but we still haven’t gotten a significant update about the title in more than three years.Īs such, even a piece of art as simple as this is exciting. That’s when Retro Studios, which developed the first three games in the series, became the primary developer on the project. Unfortunately, Nintendo was not happy with the game’s quality and decided to reboot its development in 2019. For those out of the loop, this Metroid game was revealed at E3 2017. It’s not very revealing, but it’s still exciting to see something new from Metroid Prime 4‘s development nonetheless. Blue light showers the room, and it’s hard to make out much detail because of it. We see the silhouette of Samus, which is casting a large shadow, and what seems to be a space station’s hallway. The image, which you can see below, doesn’t reveal much. While this is just another tiny breadcrumb on the trail to Metroid Prime 4‘s release, it’s the first piece of art from Retro’s version of the game that we’ve seen.
